How to Read Viator Reviews Before You Book
A star average alone doesn't tell you much. Here's what's actually useful to check in the reviews themselves.
Recency
Tour quality, guides, and even routes can change — a handful of reviews from the last few months tells you more than a large volume of old ones.
What specifically gets mentioned
Repeated specific complaints (a rushed pace, a particular guide, poor pickup timing) are more informative than generic praise.
Photos in reviews
Traveler-uploaded photos often show the real group size, weather conditions, and view quality more honestly than the listing's own marketing photos.
Operator responses
How (and whether) an operator responds to a negative review is a reasonable signal of how they'll handle it if something goes wrong for you.
